HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY JAMAICA!!!!

August 7, 2013

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY JAMAICA!! RAHHH RAHHHH!!! MO’ FYA!!!  *LIGHTA LIGHTA*  Happy 51st!!!!

What u kno bout fimmie country!?!!

Okay so my first thought was to write this entire blog in patios but I considered my non Caribbean readers and decided to spare them from running to the patios translation dictionary.

People mistake me for a Trinidadian all the time.  She’s from WHERE?! They’ll exclaim with that oh so shocking look on their faces.  But yes, I’m a Yardie!  Born and raised.  When my mom migrated to the States permanently when I was six years old I spent most of my time with my aunt who is a teacher in Jamaica.  My cousin and I were not allowed to speak patios in her home.  If we slipped you would hear her yell: ‘PROPER ENGLISH!!’  If we were playing dandy shandy (where my Jamaicans at, you remember that game?) and yelled ‘cockup’ she would run out and tell us to say ‘jump up.’  LOL!  Anyway I was broken out of patios and into speaking ‘proper English.’ Then when I came to the States it was hard for people to understand my accent so I began speaking slower so they could understand me.  That then led me to lose my accent.  However, don’t get me boiling mad because my accent and the patios WILL come out! *insert angel emoji here* Hehhehehehe

So what do you know about my Island?  Did you know that the Blue Mountains are named for the mists that often cover them, which look blue from a distance?  Yes yes that Blue Mountain coffee you are drinking is from mycountry.  How about this, did you know that Ian Fleming designed and built his home, “Goldeneye,” in Jamaica and wrote ten of his James Bond novels there?  Yep!  That’s my country.  How about that Rum is our national drink!  LOL!!!  No I’m serious, it really is.  Ackee and Saltfish is our national dish (LOVE THIS with festival).

What you kno bout fimmie country?

My country was the first tropical country to enter the Winter Olympics.  The coldest temperature being inside our refrigerators but we entered!  "Feel di riddim! Feel di ride! Get on up! Its bobsled time!” “Cool Runnings,” anyone?  Besides the USA, Jamaica has won the most world and Olympic Medals.  Jamaica is home to the fastest man on the planet, Mr. Usain Bolt *RAH RAH!!!* The crowd goes WILD!!! Ah man that race was CRAZY last year!  *cheetah grin!* I LOVE my country.  Jamaica has numerous mineral baths and hot springs that are believed to be therapeutic.  These natural spas are often referred to as “the healing waters of Jamaica.”  When you go visit, be sure to take a dip and soak your ailments away.  Now OF COURSE you know that my island is home to Reggae and Dancehall music.  Reggae icon Bob Marley famous for songs such as: “One Love,” and “Get Up, Stand Up.”  Now, contrary to popular beliefs, most Jamaicans do not smoke marijuana.  The weed is used mostly by Rastafarians for religious and meditative purposes though not all Rastafarians smoke it.  Plus, Rastafarians make up less than 1% of the Jamaican population.

What do you know about my Island?

How about this: did you know that: Jamaica's telephone system was so well developed its model was copied by AT&T.  How about that it was the first country in the Caribbean to launch a website….it was jamaicatravel.com in 1994.  Did you know that there are only two countries in the world - Jamaica and Libya - whose flags do not share any of the colours in the United States flag.  Yes Sir!  Speaking of flags, do you know what the colours represent?  No?  Well the black represents the strength and creativity of the people which has allowed us to overcome plenty odds, the gold (not yellow!) for the golden sunshine (like my smile) and green for the lush vegetation of the island.  We have nuff babes like miself.  Jamaica is number 5 on the list of countries with the most Miss World titles. Irie!!

So, what do you know about Jamaica?  Well, you now know a lot.  What are you waiting for?  Book a trip!

The above photos are from my trip last year.

Nuff Respeck and Stay Blessed!
